Steinberg has announced to close down VST 2. The second version of the audio software plugin interface that integrates software instruments and effects in your DAW was introduced in 1999. Although it has been succeeded by VST3 10 years ago, many plug-in developers still use VST2 to maintain greatest possible compatibility. Some popular DAWs like Ableton Live or plug-in hosts like Komplete Kontrol still do not support VST3. Steinberg already dropped maintenance of VST2 six years ago to ring in the transitional phase and this October they will finally pull the plug and stop delivering the SDK. Steinberg stresses the dramatic technical advantages of VST3 such as multiple dynamic I/Os, resizable windows, sample-accurate automation or audio inputs for VST instruments.
